The reviews are written on a volunteer basis by MAKE staff and friends. Sometimes a manufacturer or retailer provides a review unit, but as often as not, the reviewer simply opens his or her toolbox, picks out a personal favorite, and serenades it. Usually the tool is of modern manufacture and is available for retail sale, but sometimes we write about old tools, eBay finds, and family heirlooms. These "tool stories" usually add a human interest element to the sometimes dry approach common in product reviews, and have been some of my personal favorite Toolsday columns from 2012. Aerial (Drone) Mapping of Easter Island Posted: 02 Jan 2013 01:00 AM PST Aerial Mapping Easter Island @ 15 cm GSD @ DIY Drones. Back in May we processed an interesting data set from Easter Island, Chile at 30 cm / px GSD. Kim Anh Hoang from the Easter Island Statue Project used the 30 cm Orthomosaic and DEM to produce a 3D Flyby of Rano Raraku and an EISP excavation site. We've now re-processed the data at the highest resolution possible, 15 cm / px GSD. The original imagery was obtained using an autonomous UAV flying at an elevation (AGL) of ~330 meters with a consumer level Ricoh GR Digital III camera. The GR Digital III is not GPS enabled, so geo-tagging was accomplished locally using the UAV flight controller logs. In total, 140 NADIR images were shot at 10 mega pixel covering an area of 3.7 km^2.

Flora Pixel Aviator Cap #WearableWednesday Posted: 02 Jan 2013 12:30 AM PST   Gaïa Orain writes: The hair-brained inspiration behind this project was the notion than rather than getting lost in the bermuda triangle, Amelia Earhart blasted off to space and went adventuring to far away galaxies.  While traversing a nebulous black-hole, her typical pilot hat was transformed into this technicoloured beacon of light that enabled her fight off alien species or the occasional asteroid.  In this short film, I attempt to accurately depict her voyage in space The pilot hat is made of buttery black leather and lined with padded gold satin for space safety and comfort.  It is illuminated by 17 Smart Pixel retina burning GRB LEDS, commanded by a cute Flora using code based off the sample code provided by AdaFruit.  The stranded copper wire is stitched to the surface with gold embroidery thread and embellished with a few sequins and rhinestones.  The pattern was drafted on a styrofoam head and enlarged for my giant noggin.
