Donald Derek shows how to build your own Google TV using Raspberry Pi, NodeJS and Socket.io:

Build your own Google TV

Hackers & makers like to re-invent the wheel, and it's always fun when you do. So we're going to build our own version of the Google TV using the following open source technologies:

Hardware:

Software Stack:

  • Raspbian OS – a Debian distro specially made for the rPi
  • NodeJs
    • Socket.io – to handle the connection between our remote and our TV via websockets
    • Express – to handle some basic http requests
    • Omxcontrol – a simple module to control the OMXPlayer which is the best video player on the rPi
  • Chromium Browser
  • OMXPlayer
  • Youtube-dl – a script that let you download youtube videos
  • QuoJS – to handle swipe gestures on the mobile web app
  • HTML5, CSS3 transitions, Javascript, and Moustache as a template engine
  • Youtube API

I haven't used an Attiny861 yet (though I have a couple of them in my drawer  smiley-sweat ).
I would like to use it because: it has more I/O lines than the Attiny84 (the chip I usually use for little projects); it has a lot of analog inputs.

Can you give a better description of what hardware you're looking for right now?  It seems simple enough (from a hardware perspective) to have 4 wireless sensors send data back to a base station with an ethernet shield, which compares that data with yo...

Logitech “acquihires” TT Design Labs after their Kickstarter #makerbusiness

Tidytilt

Kickstarter startup kicked upstairs to Logitech.

The news about Logitech's acquisition of TT Design Labs, a two-member startup that originated on the crowd -funding Kickstarter program, is generating feel-good vibes in the design and engineering community today.

TT Design Labs was founded by Zahra Tashakorinia and Derek Tarnow, two designers who developed TidyTilt — a little magnetic device which serves as an iPhone stand, mount and earbud-cord organizer.

The two entrepreneurs launched the company through Kickstarter, a requirement for their school project at the Institute of Design in Chicago. They had never designed a product for sale to the public nor launched a business. Kickstarter, a private for-profit company, provided them tools to raise capital. By early 2012, the pair had more than $223,000 from would-be customers who voted with their wallets via their Kickstarter campaign for TidyTilt.

Companies are looking at Kickstarter as a place to recruit talent. VCs are looking for companies to invest in. It will be interesting to see if Kickstarters will start more stand-alone companies or will it acquihires and VC investments for successful Kickstaters.

How To Start A Hackerspace: The Essential Hackerspace Checklist

Hackerspaces-1

How To Start A Hackerspace: The Essential Hackerspace Checklist.

This document is "The List" – it is the direct result of the overwhelming interest in starting Hackerspaces that hit my inbox after co-founding PSOne and HacDC. When so many people asked for help with the very basics of starting and running a successful Hackerspace, I compiled this list to make it as easy as possible for potential Hackerspace founders to hit the ground running (and not forget anything important). Since then, "the list" has been distributed and shared within Hackerspace culture. It has helped with structuring the success of many Hackerspaces – and hopefully with this update and public release, it will serve as a handy go-to checklist for your awesome Hackerspace-to-be.

Feel free to share this widely, print it out for your clipboard, read it on your tablet, and share it with anyone you think could use this checklist to kickstart their Hackerspace aspirations.

For even more elaboration on starting a Hackerspace, I highly recommend that you also read the How To Start A Hackerspace tutorial, which you'll see me refer to throughout The List.
