The electronics are unlikely to be a microcontroller in anything but the more expensive servos, but yes, there's more to it than a pot, some gears and a motor.

“Self-healing” NAND flash memory

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 01:00 AM PST

Nandflash

"Self-healing" NAND flash memory.

Taiwan-based Macronix has found a solution for a weakness in flash memory fadeout. A limitation of flash memory is simply that eventually it cannot be used; the more cells in the memory chips are erased, the less useful to store data. The write-erase cycles degrade insulation; eventually the cell fails. "Flash wears out after being programmed and erased about 10,000 times," said the IEEE Spectrum. Engineers at Macronix have a solution that moves flash memory over to a new life. They propose a "self-healing" NAND flash memory solution that can survive over 100 million cycles.

Detta così pare quasi che basta scrivere nella RAM questi dati per avere automaticamente eventi tipo reminder. In realtà quella è appunto una memoria tampone, dove tu puoi scriverci i valori che ti pare, anche quelli di un allarme.

Midi keyboard with piezos

Hi all, not sure this is the right forum, though

I was wondering whether it is possible to build a midi keyboard using piezos as keys, and then using arduino to translate into midi.
However, I'm really a noob at electronics.

My question was: is this f...

A Primer on Cheap Software Defined Radios

A Primer on Cheap Software Defined Radios by Yuval Adam.

I've always been fascinated by radio. I clearly remember discovering numbers stations at the age of 9 using my grandparent's old shortwave radio, and I was fascinated by the concept of stuff being broadcast over the air – discounting FM radio which was ordinary.

Actually, I've always wanted to buy a frequency scanner and learn more about radio, but never got around to actually doing so, something didn't feel right. Last week, the right thing I was waiting for was found – an open-source software stack and a $15 USB dongle turn my desktop computer into a software defined radio. Essentially, this means that anyone can, very cheaply, pull data out of thin air (literally), and analyze it using code.

Up until now, SDR could only be achieved using expensive equipment, and using proprietary drivers and software. The $15 SDR option is a serious breakthrough in making the SDR world more accessible. As with most new technologies, the open-source SDR world is still not very user-friendly, and in this post I'll try to outline the basic stuff a beginner should know when entering this world.

Re: Help on configurating XBee modules

That is strange. The schematic for the adapter shows that each pair of pins in that connector is connected together internally. The reason for using the 2 x 5 arrangement, rather than a 1 x 5, is simply for physical stability. Unless there is a problem...
